Green roofs serve several purposes, such as absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, creating a habitat for wildlife, and mitigate the heat island effect by helping to lower urban air temperatures.

Types of green roofs

Did you know? There are two types of green roofs: intensive roofs and extensive roofs.

Intensive green roofs are widely used on buildings where owners want to create a park or courtyard atmosphere. These roofs will have grasses, ground covers, flowers, shrubs and even trees.

They will often include fountains, paths and walkways that travel between different architectural features to provide space where people can interact with the natural surroundings. This type of green roof requires intensive maintenance programs, and most require irrigation systems.

Extensive green roofs, by contrast, are designed using self-sustaining plant material. This type of green roof requires a minimum of maintenance, perhaps a once-yearly weeding or an application of a slow release fertilizer. Extensive roofs are usually accessed only for maintenance and require no type of irrigation system. Extensive green roofs are more economically feasible then intensive green roofs.
